Do any of you seek out autographs at conferences or events where you are familiar with an author who will be speaking? In some ways, it reminds me of when I collected baseball cards as a kid. It was very desirable to get your hands on an autographed card. I suppose in some respects, I’m collecting books as I build my library. Last night, I attended the worldview weekend conference in Arden Hills, MN. Bob Cornuke was one of the speakers and I wandered by his book table at an opportune time and was able to get him to autograph my copy of Ark Fever (Legend Chaser). Generally speaking, I don’t bring a bag full of books for authors to sign when I attend a conference. However, it can be fun to speak with an author and get him or her to sign your copy of their book. I’m always intrigued by the things people tell authors when they meet them and their typically nervous body language as they wait in line. Any of you out there have any interesting autograph stories?

The only autograph I ever got in my life was Sparky Lyle’s at a sports memorobilia show. I figured my dad might like it so I gave the picture to him. I think I was 10 or 11 at the time.
I do. A couple of years ago, my wife and I went to a church that had Josh McDowell speaking about his book, “Beyond Faith to Convictions.” At the intermission, I’m all nervous and junk (being my first time doing something like this), and when it was my turn he asked, “who do you want me to sign it to?” I said, “can you sign this to me and my wife?”, and the dude wrote out “to me and my wife God bless, Josh McDowell.”, all the time laughing at me… as was my wife.
Nick & Charles,
Thanks for sharing your autograph experiences. People certainly can get nervous when they have a brush with fame. I’ve found that many of the folks that are in the limelight tend to be pretty normal once you get to know them.
