Our family is getting ready to embark on our first ever Homeschool Road Trip to the Creation Museum in Petersburg, KY. As a homeschool family, an important aspect of this trip is introducing our children to resources that will help them maximize their experience at the Museum. The third resource we shared with our children was Charlie and Trike in the Grand Canyon Adventure by Ken Ham and Karen Hansel.
In Charlie and Trike in the Grand Canyon Adventure, children have the opportunity to become part of an exciting journey to the Grand Canyon. Charlie (a vivacious monkey) and Trike (Charlie’s triceratops buddy) are excited to embark on their tour of the Grand Canyon. Charlie quickly becomes suspicious of their eye patch wearing tour guide, thinking he looks like a pirate and may be the culprit who keeps stealing his lunch. Trike does his best to keep Charlie out of trouble, but Charlie’s curiosity continues to get the best of him, leading to all sorts of trouble.
As their journey progresses, Trike tells Charlie about the flood of Noah, how it relates to the Grand Canyon, and strives to help him understand why we can trust the Bible. Towards the end of the story Charlie gets into a dire situation. To Charlie’s surprise, it is the “suspicious” tour guide who saves him. With the tour guide’s help, Charlie learns that his first impressions were incorrect. More importantly, he comes to a clear understanding of God’s truth that will change his life forever.
My family family enjoyed getting to know Charlie and Trike as we followed them on their Grand Canyon adventure. This book is classified as a “pop up/cut-out” book. Now don’t think of the lift-the-flap (or as I called them, rip-the-flap) books from when you were a kid. This book has a map, several little booklets, and even an invitation to visit the Creation museum at the end. Throughout the book, you get to see what what Charlie is writing and drawing in his journal. This creates an great side-story, giving readers the inside track on the logical / spiritual journey he is on as the story progresses. All of these features make for a highly interactive book, that is simply a joy to read. I would strongly encourage parents and grandparents to share this book with their kids and grandkids ages 4-10. If you are going to share it with kids under age 4, be careful that it doesn’t become a “rip-the-flap” book. My rating is 5 out of 5 stars, highly recommended!
