Summer is finally starting to settle down a bit for me, so I’ve been spending some extended time down here in the Bible Geek Gone Wild “cave.” I’m digging in to the big pile of review books that have come recently and am presently working through A Week in the Life of Corinth by Ben Witherington III. The focus of this new book is to immerse you in the social and cultural context of Paul’s ministry through a fictional story. Dr. Witherington really wants to draw you in to the action, so there are many helps along the way, including pictures, maps, and mini articles. I’ve found all of these extremely helpful. It’s like the story is coming to life right before my eyes.
A Week in the Life of Corinth is not Ben Witherington’s first foray into fiction. Dr. Witherington and his wife Ann have previously coauthored four titles in the Art West Adventure series published by Pickwick Publications. Although the focus is quite different, the Art West series will give you a window into what it might be like to be an archaeologist with a bit of extra drama and conspiracy thrown in for good measure. I’ve had the pleasure of reading the first two of the four titles in this series. In my mind they rank a close second to my favorite archaeology fiction series; the Skeleton series by Paul L. Maier.
If you’d like to learn more about A Week in the Life of Corinth, I recommend you listen to a short interview about the book on a recent episode of The Book and the Spade Podcast (LINK).
