Wishing all of you a Happy Reformation Day! Last year I had the privilege of reviewing the graphic novel Luther: Echoes of the Hammer by Susan K. Leigh on Reformation Day 2011. This year I’m reviewing Inside the Reformation: The Times That Changed the World, which is also published by the good folks at Concordia Publishing House. Perhaps CPH and I will simply have to set an annual Reformation Day book review date.
Inside the Reformation uses pictures and commentary to immerse readers in the cultural context of the Reformation world. The book is divided into thirty-four general topics, including city life, clothing, food and drink, music, medicine, education, and much more. Each section is two pages in length with anywhere from six to ten pictures and related commentary explaining how each image relates to the reformation. My brief description here does not do the book justice, so interested readers should take a minute or two to view some sample pages from the book (LINK). Since this book is published by Concordia Publishing House, it should be no surprise that this book places a strong emphasis on the life of Martin Luther.
I am simply amazed at the treasure of a book CPH was able to produce using a combination of stock photos, classic artwork, and images from other CPH books. We live at a time when learners are becoming more and more visual and are more comfortable absorbing smaller bits of information. I am continually pleased with the ways CPH is willing to step outside of the traditional publishing box, in order to bring the reformation and the life of Martin Luther to a new generation.
I heartily recommend Inside the Reformation to any reader who wants to learn more about the life and times of the reformation. My wife and I will be using the book as an additional resource for our homeschooling curriculum. The folks at Sonlight and Tapestry Grace would do well to take note of Inside the Reformation as it would be a great addition to their recommended reading lists. Pastors and other Christian businesses may want to consider picking up a copy of Inside the Reformation for use as a coffee table book in their office or lobby. Your guests will surely be blessed by this great little volume.
My rating for Inside the Reformation: The Times That Changed the World is 5 out of 5 stars.
