My Very Little Christmas Story is a 24-page board book recounting “the story of Mary and Jesus, the shepherds and the wise men – the story of the very first Christmas.” The book measures 4 inches by 4 inches, so it’s a perfect size for little hands. The story is told in rhyme, making it fun to read and moving the story along at a good pace. Alex Alyffe’s paper-collage illustrations will definitely appeal to 3-4 year olds, the target audience for the book. My Very Little Christmas Story is a great way to share the story of Jesus’ birth with your little ones. My one small quibble is that the book shows the wise men visiting Mary and Joseph at the stable at the same time as the shepherds. I feel strongly that the biblical text (see Matthew 2:16) suggests a later time for the wise men’s visit. This is a problem you’ll encounter in many Christmas stories for children. I simply use it as a catalyst for a quick discussion about what the Bible says about the timing of the wise men’s visit. However, this is only a minor concern and wouldn’t prevent me from recommending the book.
My overall rating is 4 out of 5 stars.
