As a father of eight kids, I’m always on the lookout for new devotional and questions and answer books to share with my children at mealtime and bedtime. One particular favorite of my four and six-year-old has been The Answers Book For Kids series published by Master Books. We’ve nearly worn out the earlier books in the series, so I was quite delighted when volumes 5 and 6 showed up at the Bible Geek Gone Wild headquarters last month.
Each reading is two pages long and can be completed in around two minutes or less. On the left-hand page, you’ll see the question that is being considered and the name and age of the child who asked the question. Now, if there was only text on that page, I don’t think my children would be quite as engaged with this series, however they always want to know the name and age of the child asking the question and look at the picture. These extra elements do a great job of drawing the children in and really makes this series stand out in comparison to other question and answer books that tend to be less visually engaging. On the right-hand page, you’ll find the answer to the question at hand, including related Bible verses and a few paragraphs of further commentary. Finally at the bottom of the right-hand page, you’ll see some additional Bible verses to read as well. Below is an example from The Answers Book for Kids, Volume 5.
The Answers Book for Kids, Volume 5 considers twenty questions related to space and astronomy. To give you an idea of the type of questions considered, here are a few examples:
- What are black holes? (p. 12-13)
- Did Christians believe the earth was flat? (p. 24-25)
- What about the big bang? (p. 34-35)
The Answers Book for Kids, Volume 6 considers twenty two questions related to the tower of Babel and the ice age. Here are a few examples of the questions considered:
- How big was the tower of Babel? (p. 6-7)
- What time period was the Tower of Babel Built in? (p. 12-13)
- How does an Ice Age happen? (p. 38-39)
My family has found The Answers Book for Kids series to be particularly well suited for reading at either mealtime or bedtime. And although each reading can be completed in under two minutes, we often have five plus minutes of follow up discussion, especially when all of us are together at the dinner table. Our kids ranging from four to fourteen have greatly enjoyed these books, so I feel the recommended age range of six to twelve is right on.
Parents desiring to introduce their children to age appropriate apologetics resources with a high view of the authority of Scripture will find The Answers Book for Kids series a welcome addition to their family library.
My overall rating for The Answers Book for Kids, Volumes 5 and 6 is five out of five stars. Highly recommended!
