12 Days Before Christmas – Day 7

Posted by Shaun Tabatt  Published in B & H Publishing Group, Christmas, Contests

Bible Geek Gone Wild's 2nd Annual 12 Days Before Christmas(sung to the tune of 12 Days of Christmas)

On the 6th day before Christmas, Bible Geek Gone Wild gave to me a chance to win a book from B & H Academic hopefully…

Welcome to day 7 of Bible Geek Gone Wild’s 2nd Annual 12 Days Before Christmas. Today’s contest is sponsored by B & H Publishing Group.  From its original core of Bibles, textbooks, and reference titles, B&H has blossomed into a major publisher of Christian living, fiction, homeschool, youth, history, and other categories.  There will be two winners in today’s contest.

The End of the Law by Jason C. MeyerThe End of the Law by Jason C. Meyer

Commonly understood as the first theologian of the Christian faith, Paul set forth the categories by which we describe our relationship with Christ. Did he understand the new covenant Jesus announced at the Last Supper primarily as a replacement of the old Mosaic covenant God made with Israel, or as a renewal and completion of the old? Jason Meyer surveys the various differences that have been argued between the two covenants in The End of the Law, carefully and inductively perfoming a semantic, grammatical, and contextual analysis of all the Pauline texts dealing with covenant concepts.

Book seven of the New American Commentary Studies in Bible & Theology series, an extension of the long-respected New American Commentary.

The Cradle, The Cross, And The CrownThe Cradle, The Cross, And The Crown by Kostenberger, Kellum, Quarles

Although Scripture cannot be reduced to a mere piece of human writing, there is much to gain by paying careful attention to the historical, literary, and theological dimensions of the biblical text. For this reason, The Cradle, the Cross, and the Crown is offered to the serious New Testament student who seeks to better understand and share God’s word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). Across nearly one thousand pages, it thoroughly introduces all twenty-seven New Testament books and closely examines Christ’s incarnation and virgin birth, the heart of His ministry shown so vividly in the Gospels’ Passion Narratives, and the triumphant return of Jesus and our eternal reign with Him as depicted in Revelation.

Many thanks to the kind folks at B & H Academic for giving me the opportunity to review the Holman Illustrated Pocket Bible Handbook:  Pocket Reference Edition.

Do you own a Bible?  Do you read your Bible?  Have you ever wanted to read a brief overview of a Biblical book before diving into the text?  If you answered yes to any or all of the above questions, this compact volume may be just what you’ve been looking for.

The Holman Illustrated Pocket Bible Handbook is designed to give you a glimpse into the key elements, message, historical setting, and literary features that make up each book of the Bible.  The information for each book is presented over the course of six pages and is organized as follows:

Page 1:  Explanation for the name of the book, Key Text, Key Term, One Sentence Summary

Page 2:  God’s Message in the Book, Purpose, Christian Worldview Elements, Teachings about God, Teachings about Humanity, Teachings about Salvation

Page 3:  Christ in ‘book Name’, God’s Story, When the Events of this Book Happened, How ‘Book Name’ fits into God’s “story”

Page 4:  Original Historical Setting, Author and Date of Writing, First Audience and Destination, Occasion

Page 5:  Relevant Photo, Map, or Charts

Page 6:  Literary Features, Genre and Literary Style, Themes, Books Features and Structure

This concise and well organized presentation makes the text easy and quick to read.  The visual elements (color photos, maps, charts) contained throughout the book serve to both educate and visually stimulate the reader.  The book is very compact, making it just as easy to fit into a laptop bag as it is to keep it out as a permanent desk reference.  At just under ten dollars, this compact volume is a great value and will be a very affordable and useful addition to your personal library.

On My Doorstep – The Love Dare by Stephen & Alex Kendrick

Posted by Shaun Tabatt  Published in B & H Publishing Group, Books

Many thanks are in order to the kind folks at B & H Publishing Group providing me with a review copy and several additional promotional copies of The Love Dare.  This book is a central part of the plot in this fall’s surprise hit movie Fireproof.  If you haven’t had an opportunity to see Fireproof, be sure to give it a chance.  I highly recommend it.  While it may be difficult to find it in theaters, the DVD will be available on January 27, 2009.  Coincidentally that’s my birthday, should somebody want to buy it for me as a gift.  ; )  You can look for The Love Dare to be featured in a promotion we’ll be running in mid-December.  Review to follow very soon.
