Book Review: Start Here: Doing Hard Things Right Where You Are by Alex & Brett Harris

Posted by Shaun Tabatt  Published in Blog Tour, Book Review, Multnoman Books

Format: Paperback
Page Count: 176
Publisher: Multnomah Books
Publication Date: March 16, 2010
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1601422709
ISBN-13: 978-1601422705
List Price: $12.99
Rating: 3.5 Stars!

It was only two years ago that the Harris brothers brought their influence to a generation of young people with their debut book, Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations (Colorado Springs, CO: Multnomah Books, 2008). Do Hard Things made the counter cultural suggestion that the time known as adolescence can be used to do hard things for God’s glory, rather than spending all waking free time in pursuit of leisure activities. Start Here: Doing Hard Things Right Where You Are is a sort of companion book, picking up where the Do Hard Things message leaves off. If you are that person who struggled to take the next step, this is the book you have been waiting for.

This entire book is organized around answering common questions young people have when they go about preparing to do hard things. A mix of how-tos, personal stories, and practical suggestions will both encourage and prepare the reader for this journey. Here is a sampling of the types of questions answered throughout the book:

  • I’m ready to get started-on something! What should I do now?
  • How do I ask people to support my cause?
  • How do I keep my motivation for doing hard things pure?
  • What if doing hard things makes me unpopular?

This book will be useful for both group or individual study. The discussion questions at the end of the book will work for either circumstance. Also, if you want to get a head start on brainstorming your own hard things, you may want to first skip ahead to the appendix and take a look at the list of 100 hard things other rebelutionaries have done. Also, if you haven’t read Brett and Alex’s first book, Do Hard Things, be sure to begin there and take up this book next.

Author Information:
Alex and Brett Harris are the coauthors of the best-selling book Do Hard Things, which they wrote when they were eighteen. Today, the twins speak regularly to audiences of thousands on The Rebelution Tour; maintain a large online community through their blog, TheRebelution.com; and have been featured on the CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and in the New York Times. Raised in Portland, Oregon, the brothers currently attend Patrick Henry College in Virginia.

Zondervan & Moody Publishers made me a Winner!

Posted by Shaun Tabatt  Published in Blog Tour, Moody Publishers, Zondervan

I was excited to find a copy of Latayne C. Scott’s Latter-Day Cipher in my mailbox over the weekend.  I won this copy as a part of the Latayne C. Scott blog tour sponsored by Zondervan and Moody Publishers last month to promote Latayne’s most recent books:  The Mormon Mirage (Zondervan, 2009) & Latter-Day Cipher (Moody Publishers, 2009).  My review of The Mormon Mirage can be found here:  LINK.  Both of these titles are readily available from Amazon.com and other retailers.

Latayne C. Scott is the author of fifteen books in addition to other poems and articles.  She lives in New Mexico with her husband Dan.  They have two married children.  You can learn more about Latayne’s writing and speaking at www.latayne.com and www.representationalresources.com.

Be sure to visit Ann Jackson, author of Mad Church Disease at http://flowerdust.net on Thursday July 16th.   She’ll be giving away copies of Busted:  Exposing Popular Myths about Christianity.  Should Fred grace Bible Geek Gone Wild with his presence as he works his way through the blog tour, I hope he might take the time to answer a question or two.

  • Question 1:  What is the most damaging myth facing Christianity in our day?
  • Questions 2:  Besides your own book, What other titles would be beneficial to those getting started in apologetics?

Many thanks to Fred for writing this great book and to Zondervan for hosting another blog tour.  God bless!
