It was only two years ago that the Harris brothers brought their influence to a generation of young people with their debut book, Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations (Colorado Springs, CO: Multnomah Books, 2008). Do Hard Things made the counter cultural suggestion that the time known as adolescence can be used to do hard things for God’s glory, rather than spending all waking free time in pursuit of leisure activities. Start Here: Doing Hard Things Right Where You Are is a sort of companion book, picking up where the Do Hard Things message leaves off. If you are that person who struggled to take the next step, this is the book you have been waiting for.

This entire book is organized around answering common questions young people have when they go about preparing to do hard things. A mix of how-tos, personal stories, and practical suggestions will both encourage and prepare the reader for this journey. Here is a sampling of the types of questions answered throughout the book:

  • I’m ready to get started-on something! What should I do now?
  • How do I ask people to support my cause?
  • How do I keep my motivation for doing hard things pure?
  • What if doing hard things makes me unpopular?

This book will be useful for both group or individual study. The discussion questions at the end of the book will work for either circumstance. Also, if you want to get a head start on brainstorming your own hard things, you may want to first skip ahead to the appendix and take a look at the list of 100 hard things other rebelutionaries have done. Also, if you haven’t read Brett and Alex’s first book, Do Hard Things, be sure to begin there and take up this book next.
